5 Signs Your Website Is Turning Customers Away
Let’s be honest. Most people judge a business by its website.
Think about the last time you were looking for a product or service. You probably looked at a few websites before deciding who to contact. Your customers do the exact same thing. The good news is your website doesn’t have to be flashy or full of fancy animations. It just needs to make a good first impression and make it easy for people to take the next step.
Here are five signs your website might be turning customers away.
1. People Can’t Tell What You Do
This is one of the first things I notice when I look at a website. If someone lands on your homepage, they should know within a few seconds:
- What you do
- Who you help
- How they can get started
If visitors have to scroll, click around, or read a lot of text just to figure out what your business does, there’s a good chance they’ll leave. Keep it simple. A clear headline and a short description usually work much better than trying to be clever.
2. Your Website Doesn’t Build Trust
People want to know they’re making the right choice before they contact you.
Ask yourself:
- Do you show recent projects?
- Do you have customer testimonials?
- Are your photos current and professional?
- Does your website look like it’s being maintained?
If the answer is “not really,” your website may be making visitors hesitate. You don’t need dozens of reviews or awards. Even a few testimonials and examples of your work can go a long way toward building confidence.
3. Your Website Is Frustrating to Use
We’ve all been there. You open a website on your phone and the text is tiny. Buttons are hard to tap. The menu doesn’t make sense. After a few seconds, you give up and move on. If your customers are having that same experience, they’re probably leaving before they ever contact you.
Your website should be easy to use on any device. Visitors shouldn’t have to hunt for information or wonder where to click next. The easier it is to use, the more likely they are to stick around.
4. You’re Not Telling People What to Do Next
A website can look great, but if it never tells visitors what to do next, they’ll often leave without taking any action. Don’t assume people know what you want them to do. Tell them.
If you want them to request a quote, say so. If you want them to schedule a consultation, make that button easy to find. If you want them to call, don’t make them search for your phone number.
Sometimes a simple call-to-action can make a bigger difference than a complete redesign.
5. You’re Not Getting Many Leads
At the end of the day, this is what really matters. Your website should be helping your business grow. If people are visiting your website but you’re not getting phone calls, contact form submissions, or quote requests, something isn’t working.
That doesn’t always mean you need a brand new website. Sometimes it’s a matter of improving your messaging, making the site easier to navigate, or adding clearer calls-to-action. Small changes can have a surprisingly big impact.
Take a Fresh Look at Your Website
If any of these points sound familiar, don’t panic. Almost every website has room for improvement. The important thing is looking at your website through your customers’ eyes instead of your own.
Ask yourself:
- Can someone tell what I do in five seconds?
- Would I trust this business if I had never heard of it before?
- Is it easy to use on my phone?
- Is it obvious how to contact us?
- Is our website actually bringing in new business?
If you answered “no” to any of those questions, it might be time to make a few updates. Your website doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to make it easy for the right people to choose your business.
Your website is often the first interaction someone has with your business, so it should work just as hard as you do to make a good impression. You don’t need to change everything overnight. Start with the areas that may be making it harder for customers to understand your business, trust what you offer, or get in touch. A few thoughtful updates can make your website easier to use and, more importantly, help turn more visitors into customers.
